The Kane Medical Group, the primary care group owned and operated by the Council on Aging of Martin County, is to be renamed the Joseph C. and Ann S. Day Medical Center, in honor of a significant donation from the Joseph C. Day Foundation.

The donation comprised most of the funding for the newly expanded state-of-the-art medical and laboratory offices currently under construction at the Charles and Rae Kane Center in Stuart. In addition, complementary funds have been donated by others to underwrite new and innovative medical programs made possible by the new Medical Center.

“Health care, and particularly quality health care, for the elderly is a cause that is near and dear to my wife and me,” said Joseph C. Day. “The Council on Aging’s primary care medical group was founded on the principal that effective medical care requires focused, personal attention on the needs of our individual patients. I’ve seen the positive outcomes achieved by this care model, and my financial contribution is intended to bolster and expand the good work that is already being done.”

“There are 26,000 senior residents in Martin County,” Day continued. “In February 2012, we served a few hundred patients. We now serve 2100 patients and the new Day Medical Center will be capable of servicing 3500 patients.”

The Day Medical Center will still operate under the direction of Medical Director Dr. Robert Emmet Kenney, MD, Ph.D., a board-certified Internist with more than 20 years of experience in primary care medicine. Dr. Kenney will continue to be supported by nurse practitioners Katie Diamond and Lindsay Serey, and an expanded and dedicated medical staff to serve the growing patient base.

An open house is scheduled for Friday, April 28 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Members of the public are invited to stop in to meet the Day Medical Center team and take a tour of the new offices located within the Kane Center. Light hors d’oeuvres and refreshments will be served. The Kane Center is at 900 SE Salerno Road in Stuart.

The Day Medical Center staff will care for our seniors, using a “care philosophy” to provide ample time with each patient and create care plans that are tailored to each patient’s needs. The group’s success can be attributed to three factors: the time devoted to caring for its senior patients, its “care philosophy,” and the range of supplemental services available from the Council on Aging that enrich the continuum of care. These include a therapeutic adult day program, care management, caregiver support and an ongoing partnership with the Alzheimer’s research group, Brain Matters Research.

“Our staff is a well-trained healthcare team who takes the time to listen,” said Dr. Kenney. “Just as important as staying up to date with the latest in medical care, we’re also sensitive to the personal and social needs of our patients and their families.”
