Kane Center to Expand Memory Care Programs with “Fit Minds” Cognitive Training Curriculum

At the Kane Center, brain fitness is as important as physical fitness. Courses for brain fitness and mental agility are available to seniors at all levels of cognitive ability: from active seniors looking for a new challenge to those experiencing mild cognitive impairment to individuals in more acute stages of dementia. The Kane Center is now expanding innovative memory care programming with Fit Minds, a research-based cognitive stimulation therapy.

Fit Minds exercises five main areas of cognition: language and music; visual/spatial orientation; memory; critical thinking; and computation. Using this foundation, classes and exercises are customized based on participants’ cognitive abilities. The goal of the program is to maintain cognitive resilience, which is accomplished by learning new, complex content in an engaging environment.

“Fit Minds is a perfect addition to our existing cognitive training programs,” said Crystal Collier, Director of Adult Day Health Care and the Memory Enhancement Center at the Kane Center. “We do not ascribe to a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach to memory care and brain health. Being able to offer exercises that can be tailored to the needs of our more active seniors as well as those experiencing more significant cognitive decline helps ensure a majority of our seniors will see the benefits of this program.”

In addition to incorporating Fit Minds exercises into the Memory Enhancement Center and Day Club programs, the Kane Center also plans to roll out virtual group classes. The classes will be 75 minutes long with options available based on participants’ cognitive aptitude.

“By offering virtual classes, we can reach some of those seniors who have been isolated in their homes without the socialization or mental stimulation they need to thrive,” said Collier. “The virtual platform also allows seniors to access classes from anywhere in the country, so our seasonal Club Members and seniors who reside beyond our traditional service area will be able to benefit from this life-enriching program.”

Future plans also include organizing small-group, in-person classes at assisted living communities, 55 and over condominiums, private clubs, and gated communities.
