The Charles and Rae Kane Center will fill a need in Martin County for a hurricane shelter specifically designed for elders, as well as their caregivers and pets. The structure is built to hurricane resistant standards of 140 MPH winds (a Category 5 storm); it can accommodate over 100 elders in its shelter capacity.
Because many at-risk seniors refuse to leave their homes when faced with leaving their pets behind, the Kane Center includes a pet shelter area for their furry and feathered friends. Other highlights include:
- Handicapped-accessible restrooms and showers.
- High-rise cots
- A commercial kitchen
- A 650 KW diesel generator
- A quiet area for those with dementia
- On-site care managers
